While we have a wonderful Carillon that plays the Angelus at 6am, noon, and 6pm, as well as a number of other songs from a speaker system above the bell tower, I am pleased to announce that our physical bell, which was installed in 1881 and is original to the Church, has received much needed maintenance and some brand new components and is now fully functional once again! The bell received new head bolts, clapper, clapper spring, bell hammer, lubrication and tightening of all components.
You will notice that the bell is a being rung 10 minutes before each weekend Mass for 3 minutes and is a reminder to everyone in St. Marys that they are being invited to come worship God. We have some of our servers trained to do this.
There are two ropes, which should never be rung at the same time. One of the ropes moves the whole bell while the other moves a toll hammer that strikes the bell while stationary. The toll hammer allows us to ring the bell at a slow, steady pace, like we do 5 minutes before a funeral starts (once every 10 seconds) as a way to honor the deceased. The toll hammer is also rung by an usher at the consecration of the Body and Blood of Christ. Please enjoy the pictures!
